how to update ios 5.1 to 7

My daughter had a used ipod touch given to her. I am trying to set it up now. Trying to download games for her but when they go to install, it says it is not compatible with the version of ios. Says it is ios 5.1 and that it is up to date but the apps need version 7 or higher! I have tried everything I know to do with no solution

If your iPod does not have camera it is a 3G and its hardware does not support higher than 5.1.1.

A compatible version of some apps are available:

Starting when iOS 7 was released, Apple now allows downloading the last compatible version of some apps (iOS 4.2.1 and later only)

App Store: Downloading Older Versions of Apps on iOS - Apple Club

App Store: Install the latest compatible version of an app

You first have to download the non-compatible version on your computer. Then when you try to purchase the version on your iPod you will be offered a compatible version if one exists.
