Numbers 3.5.3 won't open xlxs files
My new Mac with Numbers won't open any excel files. I'm stuck if I can't open them. What's going on? How do I fix this?

What message, if any, do you get? You can download and install LibreOffice for free (there are other free office clones like NeoOffice, OpenOffice). You can also purchase MS Office if excel compatibility is essential to your job.
Is your "new" mac really running 10.7.5?
Is .xlxs is a valid file extension for an Excel file? On my machine Excel files have the .xlsx extension.
In Finder try changing the extension to .xlsx and Numbers may be able to recognize the Excel files.
