I just found a KB article that says that the libraries are linked. so now I don't know if I can delete my old library.

Q: can I delete my old iPhoto library now that I am using photos?
Doing so won’t affect the Photos library, but will prevent you from using that library in iPhoto again, and won’t free up nearly as much disk space as it looks like it will.
