iPad mini generation
I purchased my iPad mini in May 2013 but not sure if it's an original or a 2nd gen....is there a way to tell by the serial number?

If it's running iOS 8, it is not an original iPad. The original can not be updated past iOS 5.1.1.
Append the last three characters of it to http://www.everymac.com/ultimate-mac-lookup/?search_keywords= and load the page.

According to that link it is a 1st gen iPad mini. Still works great but will need to upgrade soon.
