windows users unable to logon to guest network

We provide a guest network to our clients. For some reason, PC/Windows users are unable to logon.

We are a Mac-house. Our network is a dual band internal network with 5Ghz and 2.4Ghz and a Guest Network. Main router is a Time Capsule with a Airport Extreme in bridge mode extending the networks. All have latest update. (7.3.3). It's a mixed environment with iPhones, Androids, Macs and some Tablets logging on at various times. However, lately the PC users are having difficulty connecting.

Any suggestions?

Airport Extreme 802.11ac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), iMac 4K, 4 GHz Intel Core i7, 32 GB RAM

Did the PC people upgrade to WinX (joking) 10..

wireless drivers for 10 are a pain.

Get them to delete all their current drivers and download win10 drivers direct from the manufacturer of the wireless card..

And they should still cross their fingers that it will work.

Frankly the best solution is to buy a cheapie TP-Link etc WAP for PC.

There are enough differences that PC will generally have issues with apple routers since 8.1 and the new 10.

Intel wireless cards seem particularly prone to issues.. look at the wireless card in most laptops. Notice apple uses Intel processors, Intel bridge chips.. but not a single intel wireless card to be seen. wireless is still at the voodoo stage.. and so getting things working across brands is still loads of fun.

If you want to try..

and replacement drivers don't help.

1. Can the PC join the main network?

Even if guest fails is there movement on the station if they get full access??

2. Is the wireless naming short, no spaces and no illegal characters. Apple names are problematic.

3. Passwords as above. 8-20 characters pure alphanumeric..

4. Do a test though with no password.. and control the channel.. depending on where you are in the world PC have channel issues.. test on 2.4ghz with 11, 8, 6 in that order.

If this test fails.. no other changes will work.. it is sufficiently incompatible that life will never improve.. welcome to voodoo land.

LaPastenague,

Thanks for the humorous reply and good info. I will follow the checklist and see if any of it helps. #2 may be an issue. It is doubly confounding that some PCs connect, others don't. I will start taking note of PC-flavor that works and doesn't and post an update. Perhaps others will benefit, as well.

I keep telling them to go with Mac if they want to connect 😉 but some are stalwarts.

Spoken as a true fanboi.

The simple cure.. as stated.. buy a cheap as chips wireless router or AP.. routers are usually better value.

Plug it into your main router and setup in WAP mode.. if it misses out on that because you only paid $30, use WAN Bypass.. just google it.

Set it with suitable username and password on the wireless for your PC heroes.. and that will give them suitable network access without the hassle.

Even better solution.. Spend a bit more.. $60-80 here .. might be 40-60 in US.

Buy a WNDR3800 or WR1043NDv2 and flash it over to gargoyle firmware.. again google is your friend.. I am not allowed to post the URL .. apple dislikes the competition.

Use the gargoyle router as the main network router..

Plug the apple router in bridge into the gargoyle router.. and it will operate fine for your apple clients. From their side no change is needed.

PC users can use gargoyle router wireless..

Now the big payoff.. total control of usage for every member of the household.. set throttles and quota even to all. Gargoyle is designed exactly for this sort of shared environment and works ace number 1.
