Importing a DVD onto my iMac?

Hello All,

I just found the our long lost wedding video tape, had it put onto DVD and now would like to back it up on the computer. Not liking the idea of keeping it on just one DVD, I tried playing around with iMovie (first time in almost a decade) but it said it could not import? How can I back up the entire DVD onto all my computers? Obviously, there is no copyright issue.

Thanks.

iMovie cannot import an mpeg2 standard DVD. Insert the DVD into your Superdrive and drag the contents to your Finder window. That copies it to your Mac as a TS folder, which will play in VLC or DVD Player.

You can also copy that to make additional copies of the DVD.

Alternatively:

To create an image file, launch Disk Utility and select File: New: Disk Image From Folder. In the window that appears, navigate to the desired folder and then click on Image. Give the image file a name, and click on Save when prompted. That’s it.

Or, if you have Roxio Toast, just use the copy function.
