This is a user forum, you are not addressing Apple.
Make sure DNS is set to auto (settings - general - network)
You would need to refer to your router manual to check on how to ensure port 123 is open
If you are on wifi try using ethernet

I figured it out. Here's the things Apple doesn't tell you.Look for the little tv screen icon at the top of your mac's screen. You must go to it and drop down to Apple TV. Make sure that mirror iMac and Apple TV are checked. In iTunes preferences panel, click home sharing and decide if you want to share everything or only certain files. Enter a password to keep strangers from seeing your files. BTW, the modem passwords must be entered exactly. Lower case and upper case rules apply. Finding the password for the modem is tricky but if you google how to do it or look in your cable provider help, you can find it. None of this set up for Apple TV was easy except for plugging in the cables.
It would have nothing to do with mirroring nor home sharing, those are optional and are enabled after. It was not connected to the network, the key to setup is entering network details correctly. This applies to any network device and setup is outlined in the manual.
Well it didn't work until I did the mirroring and home sharing. Before I did that, all I got on my tv screen was all the pay channels they offer. Once I set it right, we watched all night.
Yes, mirroring and home sharing will provide more viewing options. But it would have nothing to do with whether you can connect to the network, which is what you were exprressing above.
