How can I import photos from an old hard drive to my new macbook 13 if I get the message that my library version is too old?

I have an old hard drive from 2009 with many pictures that I want on it. I am trying to transfer the photos from the old hard drive to my brand new macbook air. I cannot find a way to download iPhoto, and I can't upgrade because it is not on this machine. The message that I get when i try to view my old library is Library version too old. How can I access my photos?

Thanks in advance

MacBook Air, iOS 8.4.1
