I have an iMac 8,1 (Core2Duo 2.8Ghz, 2GB RAM) running 10.5.8 and want to get it up to 10.10. I can get into OS X.
I have a 10.10.3 boot USB that I have used to install OS X on another iMac and MacBook Pro, so I know the USB is good. I cannot seem to boot to USB on this machine. What are my other options to get this to a current version?

Sounds like the long and short of it is to buy 10.6, install that, then upgrade to 10.10. Fair to say?
I think I have a friend with a 10.7 DVD. Can I upgrade to 10.7 from 10.5.8? Or do I have to go to 10.6?
1. Yes.
2. There are no 10.7 DVDs. If they happen to have a 10.7 install thumbdrive, they'd need to sell/give it to you and delete any copies of the software installed from it.
