Benchmarks

Could someone educate me about benchmarks? I am trying to use the benchmarks listed in reviews to compare laptops and I am having trouble finding more information to aid in the comparision.

Ex. Is a Cinebench score of 249 or 279 better?

Am I right in my belief at this point at a lower number is better on the Photoshop benchmark?
