On Win 7, Quicktime 7.7.8 won't install over 7.7.7

Whether via the auto update or manual download, I can't get 7.7.8 to complete installation successfully on a Win 7 (64) system. The process stops with an unspecified error.

Does anyone know what is going wrong and how to fix?
