My iMac is running very slow, please help!

My iMac is a little old for computers. It is running VERY slow lately. I do a lot of video editing for work among other things and it can't handle more than one or two things running at once without the spinning wheel coming up. I honestly click on something and the wheel spins for 5 seconds on average then I can do the next thing and it continues. It has progressively been getting worse and is to a point that I am probably going to buy a new iMac with upgrades. Here is the info. Any help is greatly appreciated.

iMac 27 Inch

Mid-2010

2.8 Gz Intel Core i5

12 GB 1333 MHz DDR3 Memory

Storage: 493.28 GB free of 999.35 GB

Anti-Virus - Kaspersky (have had this since purchase with updates obviously

Not sure what else anyone would need. I have emptied trash in iPhoto, iMovie, and everything else. I have run Onyx safely for years. Am I just trying to do too much at once with a slow processor and low memory? Thanks!

The anti virus software and third party cleaning utility. Both can slow your Mac down.

How to uninstall Kaspersky Internet Security for Mac

You don't need third party cleaning utilitiy such as Onyx. That can slow your Mac down as well. Your iMac runs maintenance in the background for you.

Good. v10.10.5 is the latest update available but you need to uninstall the anti virus software and Onyx.

Something else that can slow your Mac down is not enough available storage space.

Click the Apple  top left in your screen. From the drop down menu click About This Mac > More Info > Storage

Make sure there's at least 15% free disk space. OS X Tips Where did my Disk Space go?

Thank you both for your quick replies and help! Here you go. This is with Kaspersky protection turned off but not uninstalled.

Uninstall Kaspersky. It is nothing more then a scam on your Mac. All it does is use resources from your computer to cause problems.

Something appears to be wrong with Firefox. I suggest you uninstall it and then download this latest version and install that.

I also recommend that you get rid of BitTorrent especially form the User Login Items. It is great place to get code that has been loaded with all kinds of malware.

what are you using ffmpeg for? It sounds like questionable code in the web site that are discuss it. You might try removing it and see if it had any impact on your porblems.

You also have lots of adware:

and BitTorrent. None are doing you any favors. The adware could be due to using BitTorrent.

I agree with Carolyn on not using Onyx. In the early days of OSX it offered some useful functions for maintaining OSX. Now those functions are built into the OS and, better yet, run automatically. Onyx was nice but it's now been upstaged by improvements to theMac OS.

My iMac is running very slow, please help!
