How do I connect my Macbook Pro to an HDTV using the HDMI port?

I want to connect my Macbook Pro to an HDTV with the HDMI port. when I try this the desktop goes into screen saver mode and I can't use it and the display still does not extend to the TV. How do I do this so I can stream netflix from the laptop to the tv?

Hi there plmorros187,

It sounds like you are unable to see your screen on your TV because the computer keeps going to sleep when you connect it with an HDMI cable. I would recommend this section of the following article to help you out:

Apple computers: Troubleshooting issues with video on internal or external displays

Reset the system

You can reset the Mac's parameter RAM and SMC.

Reset the resolution

Start by resetting the Mac's parameter RAM. If the display does not come up, was previously set to an unsupported resolution, and still results in no video:

  1. Start up in Safe Mode.
  2. From the Apple () menu, choose System Preferences.
  3. Choose Displays from the View menu to open the preferences pane.
  4. Select any resolution and refresh rate that your display supports.
  5. Restart your computer.
