I have been trying to purchase a book since Thursday (8-27-15) and I keep getting the same message: "This item is currently being modified. Please try again later." I have tried other books in the series and I get the same message. I can purchase other books but none in this particular series. Does it normally take 3+ days for a product to be modified? When will I be able to purchase these books?

No one here would know. We're just other users. As to how long it "might" take, I would imagine that depends on the issue being addressed and the publisher.
you are not the only person having this issue and there have been many remedies suggested but so far nothing works. I am not able to purchase any books either and it has been going on for several days on all of my devices.
I am starting to think there might be a bug in the new iOS

I'm having the same issue. I've been trying to buy a book from the iBook store for a couple of weeks without any success. I've tried on my iPhone, iPad and MacBook. All receive the same error message. Please post any progress or solutions you hear about! Thanks.

I don't know why, but I tried again today and it worked for some reason. The price changed, but other than that I was able to purchase the book.
