How do I download music from Macbook iTunes to new iPod?

I just set up a new iPod Touch 6 and connected it to my Macbook (OS 10.6.8) to manually sync part of my iTunes library to the new device. However, a message says that a "newer version" of iTunes is required.

When I set up the iPod with an Apple tech I was guided to update its software, so that's okay, and when I check iTunes 11.4 (18) it says my software is up to date. Can anyone tell me why I'm getting a message that my iTunes software isn't up to date? Thanks!

iPod touch, iOS 8.4

Because it's up to date for 10.6.8, but not overall. You need to upgrade the computer's OS; if it's not possible to do so on that MacBook model, you can't sync the iPod touch with it.
