or – do you have spare HDD or flash drive? use CarbonCopyCloner (or SuperDuper) to clone only your home folder and then use Migration Assistant with only Mail and Contacts option
old iMac was Intel or PPC?

if your old Mac was Intel based you can update Tiger installation to Snow Leopard and migrate without problems
