i have a Mac book pro but can´t start on that computer, is it possible to save the files if i use this computer as an external disc drive with a thunderbolt cable?

Hi, I have a Mac Book pro but when I turn on the computer dosn´t start and jus show an icon with a question mark. I tried the start+control buton but just shown the internet option to restore the operating system, it dosn´t show the recovery or the macintosh hd drive.

May i try to conect this computer to another working mac book pro to use the damaged computer as an external disck drive and recover the files in it?
