Chrome is suddenly quite slow on my macbook pro, especially on ebay. I got "One-click Cleaner for Chrome" extension and cleared out some cache etc. I removed a new extension for stopping FB ads and just use AdBlock. Nothing has changed. I checked to see if eBay is slow but it's not.

Yeah, I hated Chrome and loved Firefox but my computer was heating up with Firefox. I did something to see how much something Firefox was using and it was way high (from an answer I got here). So that's why I switched to Chrome and the overheating problem stopped immediately and haven't had it since then. (The fan would go on and make a racket.) So I did just try it on Firefox and it was much better. The thing is it used to be fast. Maybe I should be on a Chrome site asking this question. Or maybe I'll go back to Firefox and see if the overheating is still happening. Thanks.

  • Back up your Mac if you have not done so already. To learn how to use Time Machine read Mac Basics: Time Machine backs up your Mac - Apple Support.
  • Update OS X. To learn how to do that read Update OS X and App Store apps on your Mac - Apple Support.
  • Don't use Chrome, a notorious resource hog. Performance degradation resulting from using Google Chrome is commonly reported on this site.

Google insists upon updating all its OS X modifications automatically without your explicit permission. That means your Mac may spontaneously begin to perform poorly, without any apparent intervention on your part.

Google products including Google Chrome will burden any Mac regardless of its age or configuration. Chrome's sole purpose for existing is to harvest your personal information so that Google can sell it. It does so by infesting a Mac with a plethora of constantly running resource-intensive root level system modifications in the same manner as a "computer virus" would, if such a thing were to exist on a Mac, which it doesn't. Read Apps can affect Mac performance, battery runtime, temperature, and fan activity - Apple Support. Read http://betanews.com/2015/08/06/dump-google-chrome-to-extend-your-macbooks-batter y-life/ for one of many such reports regarding Google Chrome.

Google has yet to demonstrate the ability or apparent desire to write efficient OS X apps. If you are required to use Google products, expect a very limited useful economic life from your hardware investment.

OK, I did the reset and when the computer came on a fan came on and was quite noisy - not like anything before. I shut down and started again and still the fan. I had to shut down hard (holding the on button down) to shut down again and then did the reset again and now the fan went off. I will see if something changed with Firefox, but think I will have to use Safari, which honestly, I don't like as much. But what to do? Many thanks for your trouble.

Aug 31, 2015 11:16 AM in response to Bela

If the problems subside while using Safari, that is success.

All Internet browsers are demanding, but Safari's use of system resources is the most efficient, by a large margin. Firefox is second. Chrome is just a disaster.

If you want to eradicate Google from your Mac, it is not sufficient to merely not use Chrome. You must uninstall it, according to Google's instructions.
