I closed a document without saving changes (ms word). I'd saved the document throughout working on it, but did not save the changes just before closing ( got confused) and I should have. I need to get back to the previous version of the document - but how? I'm 3 hours into this project... help!

You've posted into iTunes for Windows, but your product line suggests you have a Mac. If you're on a Mac and you've enabled Time Machine then you can look for an older version in there. On Windows there is a possibility that right-clicking on the file or folder it lives in will give you an option to restore previous versions. Otherwise I suspect you are out of luck. 😟
