If you no longer have OS 10.6.8 available you cannot use Appleworks 6. In Yosemite, with older versions of Pages, you can open some Appleworks programs. See this article for more info. http://rfwilmut.net/notes/aw/page1.html

Also this Discussions thread. how can i open an appleworks 6 document in yosemite

I have older Macs running Tiger and Snow Leopard and use those for Appleworks 6. Maybe you can pick up a used Mac to do this.

PS Here's another article on modifying Appleworks 6 documents. http://www.techradar.com/us/news/computing/apple/how-to-open-appleworks-files-in -yosemite-1295242

Download the free LibreOffice, and look over its documentation. It has support for ClarisWorks/AppleWorks 5/6 documents. Your mileage may vary depending on the document complexity (mixture of AppleWorks tools). I have opened word processing files, spreadsheets, presentations, and some drawings. LibreOffice will provide rudimentary opening of Database files, but all formatting and formulas will be lost.

Apple dropped support for RTF, Pages '08, and all AppleWorks documents in Pages v5. Though no longer available from Apple, the iWork '09 DVD suite of applications offered the ability to open AppleWorks 6 word processing, spreadsheet, and presentation documents. I would start with LibreOffice, and if the accuracy isn't what you need, Amazon has the Apple iWork '09 DVD, and Apple has the iWork 9.3 updater, which brings all of the DVD applications to their last revision. You will need to apply the preceding updater for Yosemite compatibility.

Good info. Have yet to try this solution. Have an old Apple G4 laptop which has Appleworks6 installed, so have a fall-back solution. Thanks for responding

    1. Launch the program and select File> Open Plan  from the menu.Browse to your program's Data folder, which is located in the Documents directory by default, and open the Archives folder.
    2. Locate the Archive folder with the name of the file that you're hoping to recover and open it.Open the most recently saved file
    3. in this folder,Note any error or warning messages that may appear, and examine it for missing data or other problems.

    4. If the file appears to be affected by corruption, close it without saving and open the file that was saved prior to that one.

    5. Repeat steps 4 - 6 until you find a version of the file that does not appear to have any problems associated with it, then select File> Save As from the menu.

    6. In the Save Plan File dialog:

      • Save the file in the same location on your computer as the original file.

      • Give the file a new, unique name that identifies it as recovered from the Archive folder.

      • Click Save to save the file at the new location using the new, unique name.

    7. In the future, this newly saved file is the one that you will work on.

Appleworks has neither auto-saving nor versioning. Nor would it run on iPhones.
