2007 macbook suddenly won't recognize or sync with iPhone

I get an error message "iTunes cannot read the contents of the iPhone (phone ID). Go to the Summary tab in iPhone preferences and click Restore to restore this iPhone to factory settings" Logo for iTunes message looks odd: rainbow colored notes and circle? What's wrong. MacBook is using Lion 10.7.5. Phone is 4S with uptodate software.
