What problems should I anticipate by adding an iPad Air 2 to my collection of Apple devices?

I'm considering an iPad Air 2 but I'm not sure if it will sync nicely with the Mac products I have now without requiring system updates, etc. I have a mid-2012 MacBook Pro with 2.5 GHz Intel Core i5 processor and 4 GB storage running OS 10.9.5. I also have an iPhone 5c with 32 GB storage running iOS 8.4.1. I have minimal experience using iCloud which looks like I'll need to do more of. Are there inherent problems or shortcomings to this scenario?
