I don't want to buy a new one because I don't want smaller, but my 2nd generation iPad won't update past 5.1 on iTunes and now a lot of my newer apps won't work. Any suggestions? Or is this as high as this device can go?

A iPad 2 can take the upcoming IOS 9 update. If you can't update past IOS 5.1.1 you may have a iPad 1. If your iPad doesn't have a camera it's a iPad 1 or you can check settings> general> software update to see if you have a update available.
Are you sure your iPad is an iPad 2? Does it have a camera?
If your iPad does not have a camera it is an original iPad. Original iPads cannot be updated past iOS 5.1.1.
You say you don't want to buy a new one because you don't want smaller? The iPad Air 2 has a large screen just like the original iPad and the iPad 2. The iPad Air 2 has a Retina display though which is much better.
How high of an o.s. can the 2nd generation iPad take?
