If we lost our original apple TV remote, how can we unpair it so that we can pair the replacement remote?

We cannot locate our original appleTV remote so we purchased a new one from the apple store only to find out that we cannot "pair" it with our apple tv without first unpairing our old remote. However the only instructions on how to unpair are using the remote, which we do not have.

How can we unpair the original remote??
