Your first task is to find out more information about the modem/router or gateway that the ISP has provided to you. Things like......

1) Is it even possible to configure the device to operate as a simple modem only? This is not possible on a number of modem/routers, and even if it is, the ISP will often lock down the settings so that they cannot be changed.

2) Will the ISP provide help and provide assistance to do this? Truth be known, most ISP are a lot less than thrilled to have you making changes to their device....since it means more work for them in terms of time and support.

3) Will the ISP support this type of setup in the event of connection problems? I think you would agree that it would make little sense to change the modem/router to operate as a modem....even if it is possible.....if your ISP will not help you in the event of future connection problems.

Important Note......more than a few ISPs will interpret your question about bridge mode to mean that you only want to turn off the wireless service on the modem/router. Doing this will not configure the modem/router in bridge mode......you will still have a wired modem/router.

Once you have answers to those questions.....and, assuming that it is possible to configure the modem/router or gateway that you have now to operate only as a simple modem, setting up the AirPort as a network router is a simple task.

This is the default setup of the AirPort device as it comes out of the box, or if you have reset the AirPort back to factory default settings. You will still need to assign a network name, password, etc, but these things are simple, and should only take a few minutes with the setup "wizard" guiding you through the configuration.
