iPhone does not see available wi-fi

I have an iPhone 4S and noticed recently it wasn't connected to my home wi-fi even though it had been set up to join automatically. When I look at the wi-fi settings it says its switched on and will join automatically but there are no available networks shown. If I type in the name of the network it says it can't find it. Anybody any ideas?
