Q: disable itunes

I do not use iTunes and am not planning to (ever) but still iTunes is running in the background. Even after quiting it starts again, and again, and again.... How can I stop this or even better, can I remove iTunes?

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Possible causes of this issue include:

    • Dashboard alarm-clock widgets
    • Alarm-clock apps such as "Awaken"
    • Screen savers that play music
    • "Amazon Music"
    • "Logitech Media Server"
    • "FitBit"
    • A custom message alert sound in Mail, or maybe the equivalent in another app
    • An Apple Remote (not applicable to recent Macs)
    • Using an AppleTV when an infrared receiver is enabled (not applicable to recent Macs)
    • External speakers or headphones with a next-track control
    • Connecting an iPhone, iPad, or iPod via USB
    • An Automator service with a keyboard shortcut that you created and then forgot about
    • An Automator calendar event
    • Third-party launcher applications such as "LaunchBar."

That's an impressive list. Some I had to check:

    • No dashboad alarms
    • No alarm clocks
    • Screensaver is set to Spotify with Apple TV theme
    • No Amazon Music
    • No Logitech Media Server
    • No Fitbit
    • Mail's not running
    • No iPod, iPad or iPhone or headphones
    • No Automator service or calendar
    • No Launchbar

I have a recent Mac so some of the points are not applicable. It turns out to be the Screensaver which is set to show album art when playing Spotify. I have no idea what iTunes has to do with this. Is it possible to disable this behaviour, this is really annoying.

Change the screensaver settings or choose another one.
