I need to reformat my external drive (Seagate). When I press repair in the Disc Utility, the repair stops before the end and the button repair is greyed out. What alternatives do I have to repair the external drive?

Does it give you any error messages?
Do you have the small Show Detail box in Disk Utility checked?
The error message I get is: OS X can’t repair the disk “Music.
I also got this message: The volume Music was found corrupt and needs to be repaired.
As if I did not know?!?!?!
Yes I did check it.
I get a lot of read statements to the effect of missing statements. The last statement in red is that the disc needs to be repaired...
Do you have a backup of the Seagate disk drive?
If you don't, try to backup as much as you can now.
It sounds like you are either going to have reformat the Seagate disk drive or use a more powerful disk repair application, such as Disk Warrior.
I have had good luck with both solutions.
The seagate drive is my backup of my laptop. I'm not worried about that part since I have another backup. Thank you for mentioning Disk Warrior.
