I haven't been able to find this in the iPhone manual. On my iPad, I believe I could change the side switch to orientation lock or something else, but can I do this on iPhone? I would like to change it from silencing the ring to locking the orientation (i want the ring to always be vibrate only). Thanks.

You are correct about the iPad but on the phone, there is no side switch. You lock orientation by swiping up from the bottom of the screen to get to the control center. The rotation lock is at the top on the right.
I realize you can use the Control Center for this, but if I'm in the App Store, swiping up the Control Center will cause me to lose my current place. I know how handy it is on my iPad to be able to use the side switch for this purpose. I have an iPhone 6 Plus and the only switch on the right is the on/off switch.
There is no side switch on any iPhone that I have ever seen. I have the 5S and it has no side switch either. Maybe there was one on older iPhones, but it has been a while if there was.

No, you cannot change the function of mute switch (which is on the left side of the phone) to anything else.
