It sounds like you have an iPhone 4s with iOS 8.4.1, with a computer that has Mac OS X Lion 10.7.5 but are having trouble syncing or using your phone with iTunes. According to the iTunes download page you do meet the requirements for the latest version of iTunes:
Apple - iTunes - Download iTunes Now
Software:
- OS X version 10.7.5 or later, Apple Music requires OS X version 10.9.5 or later
You should be able to update iTunes with software update on your Mac with the Mac App Store:
Get software updates for your Mac

Sep 1, 2015 2:56 PM in response to sterling rby ???j,Thanks for your efforts. By chance, I tried connecting with the other USB port on my MAC and problem was solved. Apparently, the USB i'd been using doesn't make a complete connection any longer. Thanks again for offering your assistance.
