i found an old ipad that has probably been inactive for about a year. it will not seem to charge or sync with itunes. any ideas?

when the ipad is charging directly in wall plug, i get apple display intermittently. if i hold down home and power button, the attach to itunes display appears. however, as soon as i disconnect to connect to lap top, display disappears and i can't get same display when connected to laptop.
