problem verifying permissions
I've skimmed thru the various discussions, but don't see one exactly like mine. Along the way, I've also wandered away from the Yosemite community, so hope I'm not stepping on anyone's toes here.
For several weeks noticed the Safari Web Content message highlighted in red follow by the phrase (not responding).Searched for that topi c and found one that sssaid to verify and repair suggestions (if needed) with Disk Utility.
I must have accidentally touched "Stop Permission Verification : (or words to that effect), because it immediately stopped; but continued reporting errors (mostly related to printer IDs, which makes sense, because I just bought a new printer, when my last one died).
Meanwhile the "barber pole" at the bottom of the screen stopped while showing less than a minute to complete.
I don't know what to do now. I can't see the screen as I type, but think the options were all dimmed.
When I left the age thinking it might just clear up by itself, it didn't. when I returned the screen looked just as I left it.
On second thought, maybe not, because Vaguely remember an option , but can't remember to do what> But when I clicked on it , it warned me that doing whatever it would cause to happen could damage the disk.
I'm guessing the problem really may be due to having too many open files — mainly because I've had a lot of Safari shutdowns since updating my OS to Yosemite and Flash Player in order to access several sites. Each time it shuts down, it reloads all my previously open Word and Photoshop Files, and though I do try to erase the duplicates as quickly as I can, I can't always get to all of them before the next automatic shutdown and recovery processes start again.
Meanwhile, any suggestions on how to complete the permission verifications?
BTW, I tried to change the community (below) from MacBookPro to Mac/intel 10.10.3, but the only option showing was 10.4.9. When I tried to edit, I received an error message saying the message was deleted, but it wasn't. I'm on that page right now. But if it happens again, I will paste a copy back in/
