I've already upgraded to Windows 10 on the Macbook Pro Retina (mid 2012), and was expecting to see an update for Boot Camp drivers (via Bootcamp 6) but the Apple Software Update programme does not seem to have an update for that. Is there a way I can directly download the drivers?

Yes, use BC Assistant and download Windows Support Software to a USB2 flash drive. Verify the version number in Bootcamp.xml.

Thanks for your efforts, but unfortunately I'm not well acquainted with Brigadier - in fact I have a hard time understanding the instructions.
So, basically I download the drivers through Boot Camp Assistant, and only run the drivers for the specific model?
If you run BC Assistant on the destined Mac, it will use the identifying information from your Mac to download correct BC drivers. Can you look at Bootcamp.xml and check lines similar to the following?

Thanks T, I figured it out - it was much simpler than I thought it would be.
Basically I downloaded drivers via Apple's Bootcamp (version 5.1.4) into an external disc driver and installed them again in windows like before.
