Is it possible to transfer photos taken on an Android phone to an iMac to store and work on them using Photos?

If the phone is properly designed and looks like a standard digital camera then it will be treated like a standard digital camers
If it is not then you need help from the vendor, their support forums or the manual on how to use it - this is a forum for Photos on IOS (an Apple OS for their phone and mobile devices)

This can be done very easily with the free App 'Wifi File Transfer':

When you turn it on it gives you an IP number you enter in your Mac's browser; from there you can access the file structure and download files.
