No sound via Internal speakers headphones etc

I have a MacBook Pro (Retina, 13-inch, Late 2013), current OS is X 10.10.5.

I have lost sound from the internal speakers, headphone jack, even on 2 x different Bose Soundlink speakers, one a V2 the other a V3.

The menu bar icon is grey and can't be changed, I have followed all the Mac help recommendations.

Hoping for something here.

It seems after 12 hours of not responding to anything, restarting did the trick.

I would still like to know if others have had this issue as there must be something that causes this issue.
