For the past couple of months I have been trying to get safari to open. Whenever I go to open the app it immediately crashes. Does anyone have any suggestions on how to fix this issue?? I have not uninstalled the app yet.

Try to launch Safari while holding down the shift key.
Safari crashing before it fully opens is a common symptom of an adware infection, usually Genieo. Please see this Apple article from troubleshooting steps:
