Mail icon won't launch on ipad2 - software up-to-date

the Mail icon stopped launching gmail on my iPad 2. Continues to work fine on iPhone. No password changes made. The Mail icon brings up a blank screen with tools frayed out...then it closes. I have tried soft reset, hard reset, deleted and re-added gmail account info.
