i pod issue with current i tunes 64 bit/ Win 8.1 download

Hi,

I am having trouble with my new PC. I have had a 30GB i-pod for about 10 years now , but recently updated my PC to a 8.1/64 bit model and downloaded the current I tunes software. I then enabled the new PC to my I tunes account and set up so I can sync the old I pod to my new PC etc. However I decided to delete all my old folders and re-arrange my music collection and this is where I have a problem.

I have created the new folders, but when I try to start to copy my library tracks in to the destination folders, they don't copy. An exclamation mark in a circle also adds itself to the library track line.

What is the best way to copy tracks from the master list of tracks to the folders?

Hello Sophie,
I understand that you did some organization with your music and iTunes is now showing that the songs are missing.
If you did this organization outside of iTunes, then you will need to put those items back in. When you move content in Windows Explorer, iTunes does not know that you moved it too a new location. To fix this, you would need to put the music back in the original location. Typically you would want iTunes to keep your iTunes library organized and in one place. Take a look at the first link for more information.

If you prefer you new organization, then you will need to delete the links in iTunes and then import them in by dragging those folders on top of iTunes. Take a look at the second link for importing content that is already on your computer.

Without knowing more about how you transferred the library between the old system and the new one it is hard to be sure what is going on. There could be a permissions issue (see Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows) or you may have moved things around in a way that breaks iTunes references to the tracks. See Make a split library portable for some background on the standard layout for an iTunes library. Unless you understand the implications there is usually no need at all to move the files around by hand. If you cannot unravel what you have done you may need to make a fresh start and reimport the media into a new empty library. If you've lost the media as well, or want to reclaim ratings, play counts, playlists etc. there is further advice inRecover your iTunes library from your iPod or iOS device.

Thanks for the detailed response. I had to copy the old i tunes folder from a back up I made from my old PC hard drive before the final switch off and then copy the i tunes folder into the music folder on my new 'puter then do a sync. All seems to be back to normal now and have since made new purchases via my new 'puter that I have been able to drag/ drop into my genure files etc.
