red iTunes symbol on iPhone 4s

I have a iPhone 4s and every time I turn it on the screen pops up with a "RED" iTunes symbol with a USB cable so I plug it in to my laptop and press update and restore (as indicated by iTunes ) but it says something like "cannot connect with iPhone"right before it finishes. Has anyone got a solution I have looked everywhere. Thanks in advance
