Q: Can I delete the old iPhoto library?

Hi,

I'm getting a bit overwhelmed with different photo libraries. Once my iPhoto library has been migrated to Photos, can I delete the library?

Thanks!

Yes, but it won't free up nearly as much disk space as it looks like it will, and it'll prevent that library from being used in iPhoto again. You should have a copy of it, as well as all the other data you'd like to keep, on an external drive.

    Hi Niel,

Thanks for the prompt response. What are the advantages of having the two libraries? I have them both backed up but it looks like they would combine to just over 500 GBs. Thought I could trim by half by erasing the iPhoto. No?

    Thanks again,

    No.

Both Libraries claim to manage 250 gigs of space, but it's the same 250 gigs, more or less.

If you are sure that you will never use iPhoto again, then you can delete it's library, but you won't get 250 gigs back, nor anything close to that.
