I own an Apple iPad mini. I was using the safari browser and other apps. On the safari browser screen a pop-up appeared. It says

Major Security Issue
To Fix it please call Support for Apple

immediately!"
Is this a scam? What should I do? Do I need to worry that any information has actually been taken? How can I make sure?

Scam. If you did not click on any links, then they cannot have access to any of your information. To remove, first double-tap on home button to bring up multi-tasking list, find Safari and swipe upwards on the thumbnail to force it closed. Then, go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website Data. That should take care of it.
Yes it is a scam. Do NOT call that number. Go to Settings>Safari>Clear History and Website data.

Thanks for getting back to me so quickly! I've followed the instructions you provided. This was helpful. I'm back on Safari and it seems to be fine. I'll have to start clearing my data more often.

what happens if you do call the number??? I called it, but hung up after being on hold for like 2 minutes!!

No, calling the number will not be a problem, unless you allowed them access to your computer, or divulged personal/financial information.
As stedman1 indicated, it is a phishing attempt to either allow them access to your device or to obtain financial information. They would gain that either from the device or after remote access they tell you there are problems with your device and con you into paying large amounts for them to fix it, since they are already remotely connected to the device.
I would also explain to the someone that sent it that it is a scam and hope they did not fall for it.
