touch screen randomly freezes on iPhone 6 Plus

I've had my iPhone 6 Plus since 11/2015 and it's been great until about 4 weeks ago. Then the touch screen started "freezing" about once a week. By "freeze" I men that it didn't function at all. No amount of quick taps, long taps or just holding an icon would get it to work - the touch screen was dead. I can't figure out what causes it - seems to be random.

I doubt it an actual H/W problem because I found a work around. If you by simultaneously hold the Home button and the Power button until the Apple logo appeared the system resets and then OK. This usually fixes the problem on the first try, but sometimes it takes 2-3 tries.

I think the problem started after I upgraded to iOS 8.4.1 - but I can't be sure.

Does anybody else have this problem? Any permanent solutions?

Thanks,

-Ed

Sorry, but since I like so many others on this thread began having this problem after an update. I think this is a software problem that may have changed the software/hardware interface, if part of it is a hardware problem. I think your solutions are ridiculous on a long-term basis. I have recovered, which I found out by trying a few things myself, by turning the unit off and on again. But it seems to me this problem is solvable and it is APPLE'S PROBLEM, not ours to solve. After paying more than $800 for a phone less than two years ago, I think it is time for this to be fixed. FIX IT!

I forgot to add, the problem seems to come about only after the phone has been idle for several minutes on the home screen. It does not happen if there is intermittent activity on the device.

I've had the same issue with my iPhone 6+. The touch screen intermittently stops responding or responds with the wrong thing. Went to Apple store. Genius bar rep did a reset and told me to do a backup and a restore from back up at home. But the problem isn't the software because that probably would've fixed it but it still intermittently locks up with the grey flickering bar on top. I think it's a hardware problem, too. Like some one else in this thread I gave it a gentle but firm whap around where the grey bar flickers and the flickering stopped and it works fine now! We'll see how long that lasts. But this is after I wasted a beautiful Sunday going in and out of different dealers investigating purchasing a new phone. My phone is out of warranty and not insured. I hope it stays fixed this time. I've done the restart 20 times or more the past two weeks. That didn't work at all today. But the gentle smack on the screen did.

Is probably totally not recommended but… when my iPhone 6 Plus freezes I tap it firmly but gently in the top left-hand corner against my palm … And it unfreezes! Obviously, do not do this hard in order not to damage the phone but for some reason it works with mine. It has got rid of a lot of my frustration.

Use at your own discretion and I am not responsible if anyone does it hard and damages the phone!!!

Hi CarpeD1em,
Sorry to hear that you are having issues with the touchscreen on your iPhone. With the troubleshooting you have done so far, make sure that the screen is clean as well. If this continues, then you will want to contact Apple Support for further assistance. For more information, take a look at the information below.
If the screen on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch doesn't respond to touch

Fix your touchscreen

Make sure your hands are clean and dry, then try these steps:

  1. If you have a case or screen protector on your device, try removing it.
  2. Clean the screen with a soft, slightly damp, lint-free cloth.
  3. Unplug your device.
  4. Restart your device. If you can't restart, force your device to restart.

If your touchscreen still doesn't respond like it should, contact Apple Support or take your device to an Apple Retail Store or Apple Authorized Service Provider.

Have a good day

Same here - seems to coincide with the upgrade to iOS 9.0.2. Screen sometimes has a flicker at the top, and randomly the screen doesn't respond to touch. Then a whole bunch of things will happen (apps opening, mails trying to get sent, etc.) as though the screen mapping was out of kilter. would prefer to find a fix as its a week to get an appointment at an Apple store for a diagnosis.

Turns out my problem was actually hardware. I thought it was S/W because a reboot seemed to fix it - but not always. However, I found that if I gave the phone a more or less "gentle" whack the phone would start working again. Then I discovered that if I "twisted" it a bit I could also get it to start functioning again.

I set up a Genius Bar appointment to have it looked at. They were just going to replace the touchscreen (in the store!), but decided to replace the whole phone since my serial number was among those phones that had camera problems. Great service by Apple - no hassles and my new phone is woking like new (because it is!). Got to love this company...

I agree all the quick fix is just temporary. I had my iphone 6 plus reset the firmware by the Apple store tech and still have the problem. Basically, the iphone 6 and plus have component problem. The store told me to replace the screen, but said there is no guarantee the problem will not happen 3 months later (after the warranty). He suggest me to trade up to a iphone 6S or 6S plus to definitely end this problem. I think the iphone 6 has design issue. It is using components that can easily fail. Apple refuses to admit its genetic problem and want customers to pay the cost to repair or trade up to newer model of iphone.

A disappointed customer

My iPhone 6 Plus has this issue after using for about 12 months, DEC last year.

Previously, I though apps caused this problem but this problem frequent happen recently.

I heard many feedback from surrounding friends and info from internet regarding this issue.

It is definitely hardware problem and claimed as design issue.

I watched some tube channel showed reballing or/and replaced chip to solve the problem.

My iPhone 4 and iPhone 5 never having this issue.

The nightmare begins from iPhone 6 Plus.

Screen freeze when want to make an urgent reply of phone call.

Sad! 😟
