Net Masks and the Subnet Calculator

Hi,

Regarding the below chart,

User uploaded file

Which is pulled from http://www.sustworks.com/site/prod_ipr_subnets.html

Network range would be 0-255

I understand that you need to subtract the IP address of network address and broadcast so I thought it would result to 253.

Although I was told that the correct answer is 254. The subtraction was made from 256-network address-broadcase=254 is what I was informed.

I'm not sure why it gets subtracted by 256? Can someone explain please?

Hi,

Because 1 to 255 would be 255 numbers, add zero or start counting from zero & we get 256 numbers to chose from in on Byte/8 bits. 🙂
