Q: I can't logon my iMac since it went all blue

I have a late-2009 iMac 24-inch desktop using Mountain Lion.

While on a financial website using Safari, I tried to open another page and the current page went all blue.

Moving my cursor around on the page removed chunks of the blue.

Nothing was active.

After a shutdown, when I typed in my password it wouldn't respond.

After another shutdown I clicked on 'guest' and it went to the next screen but then it was non-responsive.

After unplugging the iMac for a while, it would only give me the opening screen and not let me click on my icon.

Any ideas?

Thanks…walter

A Safe Mode boot deletes system caches that may help.

Top left corner of your screen click the  Apple   > Shut Down.

After your Mac shuts down, wait 10 seconds, then press the power button.

Immediately after you hear the startup tone, hold down the Shift key. You should press the Shift key as soon as possible after you hear the startup tone, but not before.

Release the Shift key when you see the gray Apple logo and progress indicator.

Once you are in Safe Mode, go back to the Apple menu. From the drop down menu click:  Restart

Boot into the Recovery Drive by holding down Command R when restarting.

Run Repair Drive using Disk Utility in Recovery.

This should help identify any drive issues you might be having. It's possible it will tell you to reformat your drive. Reformatting erases all data. Be sure to backup first.

Thanks, Carolyn…surprisingly my Mac opened fine this morning…but I did use your suggestion [and saved your advice for the future]…I also used dianeoforegon's suggestion to repair disk as well--no issues were found…thank you both…walter
