iTunes won't play songs I had before Apple Music

I have several songs in my iTunes library that iTunes will no longer play after I started my Apple Music trial. Most of these are DRM-free songs that I downloaded for free (legally) and imported into iTunes years ago. Shouldn't these just be sitting in my local library? Why won't iTunes play them?
