what if I no longer have my original sim and want to unlock my phone?

is there any way to unlock my iPhone without the sim it came with?

iPhone 6, iOS 8.4.1

Yes. You must ask the carrier it is locked to to unlock it. Then you can insert any SIM. Check with the carrier for their conditions for unlocking.
