when I put the charging cable in the iPod I have to put pressure on the cable and push up on the cable for the charger to be recognized. I have tried different cables in order to rule out the cable. So what should I do?

You could try inspecting the charge / data port on the touch to see if there is debris you might be able to remove (carefully though!). Sometimes lint from pockets gets in there. Short of that the only other thing I think you can do it take to the Apple Store and see if they can service the port.
