I have had two "Panic" crashes lately and I want to run some disk diagnostics. How do I do that?

I have had two "Panic" crashes lately .. and I want to run some diagnostics ..

It says to go to the "Disc Utility" .. where is that hidden .. and what should I do?

As an aside .. I used to be a PC tech back in the 286 era .. Now all I can do is get the covers off ... Which I did .. and blew some dust out of the thing ..

I notice that the battery seems to have become fatter than it was .. Sign of death? ... could be!

Why don't you post the kernel panic report per these instructions:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201753

Disk Utility can be found in Applications>Utilities. My guess is that you want to run Disk Utility>First Aid.

If the battery has signs of expansion, it MUST be replaced. Iy can damage your MBP.

You might also run an Apple Hardware Test:

https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201257

Note an error free AHT is not definitive.

Ciao.

Thank you very much!

I have been out of this game for ages .. now 73 .. climbing mountains in the Dolomites!

I guess I will have to find an apple sales place and get a new battery ..

I'm not up on the jargon .. What is an MBP.

And where do I find the kernel panic report plz!

With your help, I found the disc test file .. so I will close down the apps running and run the test .. see what happens.

If you don't hear anything it means it died! Ha Ha! ... I hope not!

These instructions must be carried out as an administrator. If you have only one user account, you are the administrator.

Launch the Console application in any of the following ways:

☞ Enter the first few letters of its name into a Spotlight search. Select it in the results (it should be at the top.)

☞ In the Finder, select Go Utilities from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-U. The application is in the folder that opens.

☞ Open LaunchPad and start typing the name.

In the Console window, select

DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION System Diagnostic Reports

(not Diagnostic and Usage Messages) from the log list on the left. If you don't see that list, select

View Show Log List

from the menu bar.

There is a disclosure triangle to the left of the list item. If the triangle is pointing to the right, click it so that it points down. You'll see a list of reports. A panic report has a name that begins with "Kernel" and ends in ".panic". Select the most recent one. The contents of the report will appear on the right. Use copy and paste to post the entire contents—the text, not a screenshot.

If you don't see any reports listed, but you know there was a panic, you may have chosen Diagnostic and Usage Messages from the log list. Choose DIAGNOSTIC AND USAGE INFORMATION instead.

In the interest of privacy, I suggest that, before posting, you edit out the “Anonymous UUID,” a long string of letters, numbers, and dashes in the header of the report, if it’s present (it may not be.)

Please don’t post other kinds of diagnostic report.

I know the report is long, maybe several hundred lines. Please post all of it anyway.

When you post the report, you might see an error message on the web page: "You have included content in your post that is not permitted," or "The message contains invalid characters." That's a bug in the forum software. Please post the text on Pastebin, then post a link here to the page you created.

Thanks a lot .. I am not familiar with this delving .. its new to me .. certainly on a Mac!

Thank you so very much for helping! I ran the Disk test and it said the disk " appears OK" ... thats positive at least!

As I said previously ... the battery is getting fat .. not a lot .. but a bit. I'm in a remote place called Val Di sole .. the nearest town is Trento ... 70 ks .. and they may have an Apple shop ( and they may not!! ha ha !)

Here is the Kernel report !

As it happens 26/8/15 was my 73 rd birthday! Ha Ha! ... Retired .. but still active .. now riding up hills on my MTB here ... like 1450 met elevation change in 38 ks .. over 4 hours! Pant pant!!

Notes that may help.::--

I use an old copy of Parallels to access Infranview for tinkering with photos .. It better than Preview at this software level ..

When I run my ancient copy of XP ... I sometimes find that a lot of crap comes my way .. so I kill Parallels as soon as I can.

Another thing that I recently added is a Suunto watch .. for Heart rate etc .. it runs a thing called "Move" .. so that is what that is if you see it !

The only other item is a Tom Tom GPS for the car .. that updates here as well!

The blue tooth runs a mouse.

Kaspersky got deleted ages ago .. obviously some still there .. very hard to get rid of it!

Mac keeper is active.

I haven't upgraded from "snow leopard" as I love the " bounce " function on this level !!

If later versions have that, and a better photo facility, it might be better for me to upgrade my machine ..

What do you suggest??

Thanks for the help and thanks for caring!

My best regards!

Andine

You have too many goofy kernel extensions loaded, including same kromtech junk, one for Kaspersky and TWO Virtualization suites (maximum ONE allowed). (If you want to use a fireWall, use the one Apple provided and tested.)

net.kromtech.kext.AVKauth 2.3.9 - last loaded 255380701529870

com.google.filesystems.fusefs 2.0.3

net.kromtech.kext.Firewall 2.3.8

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetAdp 4.3.8

com.parallels.kext.prl_vnic 5.0 9220.531002

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxNetFlt 4.3.8

com.parallels.kext.prl_netbridge 5.0 9220.531002

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxUSB 4.3.8

org.virtualbox.kext.VBoxDrv 4.3.8

com.parallels.kext.prl_usb_connect 5.0 9220.531002

com.parallels.kext.prl_hid_hook 5.0 9220.531002

com.parallels.kext.prl_hypervisor 5.0 9220.531002

com.kaspersky.kext.klif 2.2.0d16

These are probably causing instability.

Do you have a Trusted Backup? If not, that should be your FIRST Priority. and making a second copy for some serious re-arranging may be needed, so you will need to find a spare drive as well.

Sep 2, 2015 10:25 AM in response to Grant Bennet-Alder

You guys are fast to say the least!

Thank you for the help !

I have a spare drive that I use for back ups using the " time machine" ... I have done a back up with that recently .. but it did not take very long !

I can do another now if you like .. Mostly I have photos on the machine .. and old emails that I wanted to keep for various reasons. The photos are also mostly archived on a big USB drive.

looking at it just now ...

My last backup was done 29 th Aug .. and it seems to have lots of stuff in it, including "mach_kernel" created on 06/08/11

Some system stuff , applications etc .. and GoogEarth. There have been several updates of that lately .... usually 40 mbs a time.

Looking at that I think I have a back up!

regards

Andine!

the battery is getting fat

Then it has to be replaced immediately. Otherwise the machine is going to be wrecked. A fire is not out of the question.

A

"MacKeeper" is a scam with only one useful feature: it deletes itself.

First, back up all data.

Note: These instructions apply to the version of the product that I downloaded and tested in early 2012. I can't be sure that they apply to other versions.

If you have incompletely removed MacKeeper—for example, by dragging the application to the Trash and immediately emptying—then you'll have to reinstall it and start over.

IMPORTANT: "MacKeeper" has what the developer calls an “encryption” feature. In my tests, I didn't try to verify what this feature really does. If you used it to “encrypt” any of your files, “decrypt” them before you uninstall, or (preferably) restore the files from backups made before they were “encrypted.” As the developer is not trustworthy, you should assume that the "decrypted" files are corrupt unless proven otherwise.

In the Finder, select

Go Applications

from the menu bar, or press the key combination shift-command-A. The "MacKeeper" application is in the folder that opens. Quit it if it's running, then drag it to the Trash. You'll be prompted for your login password. Click the Uninstall MacKeeper button in the dialog that appears. All the other functional components of the software will be deleted. Restart the computer and empty the Trash.

Quit MacKeeper before dragging it to the Trash.

Let MacKeeper delete its other components before you empty the Trash.

Don't try to drag MacKeeper from the Dock or the Launchpad to the Trash.

Don't try to remove MacKeeper while running in safe mode.

B

Remove "Kaspersky Security" by following the instructions on this page. If you have a different version of the product, the procedure may be different. The product includes a Safari extension that may not be removed by the uninstaller.

Back up all data before making any changes. Never install any commercial "anti-virus" or "anti-malware" software again.

C

"Parallels" and "VMWare" are both installed. Remove at least one and update the other (if applicable) to the current version.

Any third-party software that doesn't install from the App Store or by drag-and-drop into the Applications folder, and uninstall by drag-and-drop to the Trash, is a system modification.

Whenever you remove system modifications, they must be removed completely, and the only way to do that is to use the uninstallation tool, if any, provided by the developers, or to follow their instructions. If the software has been incompletely removed, you may have to re-download or even reinstall it in order to finish the job.

I never install system modifications myself, and except as stated in this comment, I don't know how to uninstall them. You'll have to do your own research to find that information.

Here are some general guidelines to get you started. Suppose you want to remove something called “BrickMyMac” (a hypothetical example.) First, consult the product's Help menu, if there is one, for instructions. Finding none there, look on the developer's website, say www.brickmymac.com. (That may not be the actual name of the site; if necessary, search the Web for the product name.) If you don’t find anything on the website or in your search, contact the developer. While you're waiting for a response, download BrickMyMac.dmg and open it. There may be an application in there such as “Uninstall BrickMyMac.” If not, open “BrickMyMac.pkg” and look for an Uninstall button. The uninstaller might also be accessed by clicking the Customize button, if there is one.

Back up all data before making any changes.

You will generally have to restart the computer in order to complete an uninstallation. Until you do that, there may be no effect, or unpredictable effects.

If you can’t remove software in any other way, you’ll have to erase and install OS X. Never install any third-party software unless you're sure you know how to uninstall it; otherwise you may create problems that are very hard to solve.

Trying to remove complex system modifications by hunting for files by name often will not work and may make the problem worse. The same goes for "utilities" such as "AppCleaner" and the like that purport to remove software.

I have had two "Panic" crashes lately and I want to run some disk diagnostics. How do I do that?
