how do i check if my iMac has a virus?

I clicked on to a website and a message box came up advising me that I had been infected with a virus, it names the OS system of my iMac and click here to completely scan my machine and clean/rid it of the virus, I ignored this believing it to be a scam but how do I check if my iMac actually has a virus, and did I do right?

Any such popup message will be a scam. Do not interact with such sites, or call any number presented.

Force quit Safari, then restart Safari while holding the shift key.

Macs do not get viruses. You do not need any antivirus software. There is a difference between virus and malware/adware

You may find useful info and opinions in this thread:

If you do not want to remove adware manually use this anti malware tool in order to scan and remove it: https://www.malwarebytes.org/antimalware/mac/?utm_source=blog&utm_medium=social

Hi, thank you so much for your quick and most helpful reply and also reassurance because having formerly used Windows for some years it was such a relief to come over to Apple and no viruses and to be honest this is the first such occurrence I have experienced in 3 years and why I was worried. I will familiarise myself with the links you provided. Thanks again.

Kind regards
