I know how to send Mail attachments on the iMac as an icon, but they do not arrive as an icon. How can I ensure they are received as an icon and they are a separate, printable document. .

The Mail application always sends a "separate, printable document." If the document is only one page, however, Mail will display the document as as image. But it is still a "separate, printable document." You can drag that image to your desktop and the document will be copied.
